Bernhard Ette ms grossen Schauorchester, Gesang: Claire Bäuerle – Du darfst mir nie mehr rote Rosen schenken (Dont Dare Bringing Me Red Roses Again) Foxtrot (Michael Jary/ Bruno Balz), Tempo 1940 (Berlin) NOTE: This song is one of pearls of the duo Jary (composer)/ Balz (text) of the swing era in Nazi-Germany. This lovely swinging foxtrott was made a hit of the year 1940 by the Nazi-Sirene, Zarah Leander. It was frequently recorded by German swing bands (eg Erhard Baushke) as a dance tune. I did not find much about the soloist, Claire Bäuerle. She was an actress and singer mentioned as one of performers in Paul Abraham’s Operette „Blume von Hawaii” in Berlin, in 1933. Reinhard Wenskat was a drummer and piano player from Denmark, who led a dance band in Berlin in the 1920s. Compared to many other German records of that time, some of his records are above average, at least from a jazz viewpoint. Though Wenskat’s band couldn’t really swing, their rendition of ‘Milenberg Joys’ (on Grammophon 20580) is a charming example of how German soloists tried to copy their US idols. In fact some of the band members were not German, but Dutch: Martin Helmsmoortel, Louis de Vries (tp), Henri van den Bossche (tb), Jack de Vries (tuba). Others included Harry Pohl (cl, as), Walter Lindemann (p, arrangements), Sascha Lumm (bj), Wenskat (dr). Recording location and date: Berlin, August 1926 Video Bewertung: 4 / 5
Hab’ keine Angst vor dem ersten Kuss (Don’t Be Afraid Of Your First Kiss) (Stolz/ Reisch) Slowfox ad Tonfilm “Der Herr auf Bestellung” (A Man To Order) – Karkoff-Orchester mit Refraingesang, Derby 1931 NOTE: A German manufacture Derby produced cheap 20 cm records in 1920/early 1930s. The Derby’s house band was “Karkoff-Orchester”, the name very often nicknaming the foremost dance bands of the Weimar era in Germany (eg orchestras conducted by Paul Godwin, Julian Fuhs Marek Weber, Dajos Bela and many others). Unfortunately I was not able to identify orchestra playing this popular film “schlager” composed by Robert Stolz.
Egon Kaiser Tanz-Orchester, mit Gesang: Paul Dorn – Du bist mir so sympathisch, aus der Operette “Clivia” (Nico Dostal /Charles Amberg), Grammophon 1934 (Germany) NOTE: Egon KAISER (b. 1901 in Berlin, d. 1982 in Berlin) German bandleader and arranger. He received a solid musical education in Berlin Conservatory, after which he was engaged by the State Opera orchestra (1925-26) and in1926-29 by Berliner Philharmonikern (as a violinist). This was, however, end of his career in classical music performing. In 1929 he departured from the symphony world and established his own dance band. With much applaud he performed in best night clubs and restaurants of Berlin (eg Moka-Efti, Atlantis). His contract with Deutsche Grammophon and popularity of his records opened for him avenue to front cover publicity and film. In later years he also recorded for Imperial, Tempo, Tri-Ergon. On labels he sometimes used pseudonyms (Mario Elki, Harry Hiller). In 1933, when the nazis took power, he remained active and popular through 1930s (until the end of 1960s). Video Bewertung: 5 / 5
Heut war ich bei der Frieda Foxtrot (Jim Cowler) Text von Fritz Rotter Marek Weber und sein Orchester Electrola EG 702/BWR1270 Berlin, c. Oktober 1927 The song was a huge hit in 1927, and with this song a lot of Orchestras began to jam with the melody, at least they vary the melody in a very jazzy way……. Many versions had been recorded, every with a little different arrangement and run of solos and instruments. Some versions on YT: Paul Godwin: www.youtube.com Saxophon-Orchester-Dobbri: www.youtube.com Kiddy record: www.youtube.com Austin Egen: www.youtube.com Dajos Bela: www.youtube.com Bernard Ette: www.youtube.com Charly Gaudriot: www.youtube.com Jack Preßburg www.youtube.com Jack Hylton & Austin Egen: www.youtube.com In June 1926, Paul Whiteman and his Orchestra opened in the big Theater in Berlin. His tour across Germany via the summer of 1926 had a big infuence to the german Dance Band scene. With the Weber version you hear some impacts of the “Symphonic Jazz” idiom. Also I love the sound of the Weber Band, not as hot as others, but with a great, big sound – simply perfect with big hotel ballrooms….
